Welcome, Richmond Consortium!

Dear Friends:

I would like to offer a warm welcome to the faculty, students, administrators and friends of the Richmond Theological Consortium. Now that our Consortia have begun collaboration, you will be receiving this newsletter regularly. The Bulletin seeks to make all our members and friends aware of upcoming events and of items of ecumenical interest. We welcome suggestions and contributions--especially short articles from alumni/ae on their grassroots ecumenical experience.

A Consortium stretching from Gettysburg to Richmond has much to offer its members--sharing of courses, libraries, and events; dialogue of faculty and administrative colleagues; common programs and projects. And our Consortium has much to offer the region, the country and even the world--from reflections on the environment, science and religion--to preaching and politics.

Together, we have great gifts and manifold possibilities.

Welcome and Christ’s Peace,

John W. Crossin, OSFS
Executive Director

Dean Hoge Will Address Faculties’ Convocation

Dr. Dean Hoge, Director of the Life Cycle Institute and Professor of Sociology at Catholic University, will keynote the Annual Faculties’ Convocation. He will speak on: “Connecting with Today’s Theological Students--Contemporary Theological Students: A New Generation.”

Hoge, who is Presbyterian, is a leading researcher on trends in both Protestantism and Catholicism. Dr Henry Simmons of Union/PSCE, Fr. John Corbett of Dominican, and Dr. Youtha Hardman-Cromwell of Wesley will offer responses to the address. In selecting this topic, the Council of Academic Deans of the Consortium hope that it will initiate discussions of effective communication and teaching methods today.

The Convocation will take place at Washington Theological Union on Monday, September 24. The convocation will begin with prayer at 3:30. Faculty area groups will meet after the address and responses. The day will conclude with dinner at 6:00.

What’s Going On?

The Librarians Group will meet for a full day of presentations at the Library of Congress on November 16. Professionals at the LC will discuss copyright, digitization and other issues related to technology with our librarians and members of the Consortium Technology Committee. Cheryl L. Adams of the LC has been attending the Consortium Librarians’ Group regularly.

Jennifer Wade has joined the Consortium staff as Director of Communications; Eileen Jacxsens will assume the new role of Office Assistant.

The directors of Doctor of Ministry programs in the Consortium schools met this summer to discuss collaboration. They appointed a sub-committee [Rev. Barney Hawkins of VTS, Dr. Lewis Parks of Wesley and Fr. John Crossin] to investigate some specifics and report back to the group.

Dr. Daryl Domning of Howard will serve as coordinator of the Religion and Science faculty group this year. The group will meet for lunch at WTU on Friday, September 14.

The new Consortium Handbook--containing library information, directions to the various campuses, etc--was developed this summer by Linda Harrington of CUA and Eileen Griffin of the WTC. It will be distributed to all students and faculty. A new WTC brochure is to appear shortly.

Administrators and faculty met on August 13 at the WTU to discuss their concern for the spiritual formation of lay Consortium school students. They agreed to meet once a semester and will reconvene in February.

Jenni Ovenstone of Virginia Seminary and Chett Pritchett of Wesley Seminary will co-chair the Consortium Student Board this year.

Former Consortium Vice Chairman Fr. John Hotchkin dies unexpectedly

Rev. John F. Hotchkin, Director of the Catholic Bishops’ Office on Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs, died of a bronchial infection on June 24 at 66 years of age. “Jack”, as he was known to all on the Consortium Board of Trustees, served two terms and was Vice Chair. He contributed strongly to the current renewal of the Consortium. His efforts helped to initiate both the Consortium Ecumenism Awards and the Doctor of Ministry in Ecumenism and Reconciliation program at Wesley. Jack was a leading person--both nationally and internationally--in the ecumenical movement.
